Changing the Landscape of ESports in Brazil: An Interview with the Founder of Gravol!

Writer's picture: Team SBGTeam SBG

SBG had the honour and pleasure of working with the Brazilian startup Gravol Sports in Spring 2020 as consultants. We recently caught up with the founder Arthur Araújo to discuss a variety of topics related to Gravol Sports and his experience of working with SBG!

1. Hi Arthur. Can you please share a bit about yourself and Gravol Sports?

I’m an engineering student from Brazil. I was on an exchange program at Cal during Spring 2019, studying entrepreneurship and technology at the SCET. During the SportsTech Class, I created Gravol Sports, a startup building software to help sports and esports teams to analyze performance data. We had some tests with Cal Soccer and started operating in the Brazilian Soccer industry in 2020. Recently, we also started working in esports, helping coaches analyze their videos of casual players to help them play better.

2. How did you get introduced to the Sports Business Group at Berkeley and what made you decide to partner with us?

I found the group through the SportsTech course. Then, I connected with the Vice President on LinkedIn and started chatting about a partnership. I decided to collaborate with the group knowing the high ability of Cal students and how it could help me and Gravol in market research.

3. How has your experience been working with the SBG team?

It has been great! We had a call to decide which topics to work on for the project and how the SBG team could help us achieve new targets. During the semester, they developed the work and sent some questions to align at any point.

4. What are your future goals with Gravol Sports?

The esports industry is awesome. Since it is new, mostly in Brazil, there are many opportunities to work on it. We aim to be the biggest platform for esports coaching in Latin America in the coming years.

5. How can SBG stay connected with Gravol Sports?

Whenever I or Gravol can help the group, we will be available. We will always keep the group updated about our progress.

6. What are some tips that you would like to share with undergraduate students about entrepreneurship and other jobs?

Working on problems that you are passionate about gives energy and motivation to accomplish great things. The challenge is how to start and not be afraid of making mistakes in the beginning. In any industry that you want to work in, there will be people with intense problems needing technology solutions. Start small, learn from your mistakes, be passionate about the problem, and you can get there. If you are from Cal, it helps a lot. There are Bears in any great company willing to help you start!
